Two new Horticulture classes will be offered at the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and College during the upcoming spring semester. General Horticulture and Floral Production and Design are meant for the home gardener as well as the professional gardener, according to Dorothy Massey, adjunct instructor.

Offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings, from 4 to 5:15 p.m., the General Horticulture class encompasses the principals and practices of modern day fruit/vegetable and/or flower/tree/shrub gardening with an emphasis on hands-on approach.

“We will have basic discussions on how modern plant sciences have applied in all aspects of horticultural production from propagation to marketing,” Massey noted.

Floral Production and Design will also meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings, 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. It is designed for the individual flower lover and the professional. Using the hands-on approach, the course will cover the different types of flowers/shrubs/trees as well as the different areas of floral design.

“Both of these classes will help guide the flower and/or vegetable grower to a more productive effort and result from their efforts,” Massey added.

Both classes will be held at New River’s Lee Street Complex (former Lewisburg Elementary School), which has ample parking located off Greenbrier Street adjacent to Hollowell Park.

Classes begin Jan. 13 and will conclude May 2. These are for-credit college courses in New River’s new Horticulture program. The deadline to register for these or any classes at New River for the spring semester is Jan. 3. All college offices will be closed Dec. 23-Jan 1, so all current and prospective students are strongly encouraged to register before the holiday break.

For further information, or to make an appointment to register, telephone 304-647-6560 or visit the college offices in Greenbrier Hall, 101 Church Street in Lewisburg. Information can also be obtained at www.newriver.edu.
