Christopher Dale Roth, 49, of Alderson, formerly of Aurora, WV, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Jan. 2, 2025. Born Nov. 12, 1975, in Morgantown, he was the son of Frances (Loughrie) Mayor and husband David, of Aurora, and Gary Roth of Eglon.
Chris attended Preston High School where he graduated in 1994. After graduation, he attended Glenville State College where he ran track. He then lived in North Carolina and Colorado before settling in Morgantown. He obtained his master’s degree in physical education from West Virginia University in 2008. Chris spent the majority of his teaching career at Eastern Greenbrier Middle School.
He was a beloved physical education teacher there for 16 years, helping to implement programs such as disc golf, archery, and mountain biking. He was named West Virginia Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 2016. His heart was on the football field, where Chris was an assistant coach. He was involved with other sports teams as well and enjoyed announcing for the basketball team. Coach loved his “kids.”
Chris had many hobbies throughout the years. He was frequently on the disc golf course, playing a round by himself, with his dog, or in a tournament. He loved traveling to North Carolina to hang out with his lifelong best friend, Jeremy Lantz, and his family. He was an extraordinary uncle to his nieces and nephew, who brought him so much pride. Weekends spent on the river or around the campfire were some of his favorites. Summers won’t be the same without him.
In addition to his parents, Chris is survived by his brother, Jason Roth, and wife Carrie, of East Aurora, NY; his sister, Lauren Peddicord, and husband, Jason, of Bruceton Mills, WV; his nieces Caylie Roth, Kendall Roth, Mila Peddicord, and Everly Peddicord; and his nephew Holden Peddicord; his faithful companion, his blue heeler Shay; along with countless special friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, co-workers, and students.
Chris was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Gay and Elizabeth Loughrie, his paternal grandparents, Dale Roth and Avenell Roth Parsons, and his first four-legged love, PJ.
His family received friends at the River of Life Church of God, 503 Highland Trail, Alderson, on Saturday, Jan. 4. In keeping with his wishes, cremation will follow.
Alderson Funeral Services and Smathers Funeral Chapel are honored to assist Coach Roth’s family, friends, and students during this sudden and unexpected loss.
