Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys

The legendary Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys, West Virginia’s most enduring bluegrass ensemble, are set to grace the stage of the Opera House once again on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. Under the skillful leadership of Mill Point native Richard Hefner, who has been at the helm for more than five decades, the band has earned a stellar reputation for their authentic bluegrass sound, impeccable vocal harmonies, and deep-rooted connection to the region’s musical heritage. Accompanying Richard is his all-star band, The Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys, comprised of some of the most talented musicians in the genre, including Chris Nickell on guitar, JR Loudermilk on bass, and Dave Bing on fiddle.

For those who wish to delve deeper into the band’s history and Richard Hefner’s musical journey, the Opera House Story Sessions offer a treasure trove of captivating videos and podcasts. These sessions provide a glimpse into Richard’s early years and highlight some of his most cherished songs. In a particularly fascinating segment, Richard shares stories of his time playing alongside the legendary father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe, offering a rare insight into the origins of this beloved musical style.

This highly anticipated event is not only a treat for bluegrass enthusiasts but also an opportunity for families to enjoy a memorable musical experience together. Adult tickets are priced at $10, while young music aficionados aged 17 and under can attend free of charge, making it an accessible and inclusive evening for all. Tickets can be purchased online at pocahontasoperahouse.org, in person at the 4th Avenue Gallery in Marlinton, or at the door on the night of the performance.

The Opera House Performance Series is made possible through the generous support of grants from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History and the West Virginia Commission on the Arts. The series also benefits from the backing of Pocahontas County Dramas, Fairs and Festivals, and the Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau, underscoring the community’s unwavering commitment to preserving and celebrating its rich cultural heritage.
