Betty Jane McVey Shields went home to be with the Lord on August 28, 2024. She was born on September 30, 1930, and lived most of her life at the family homestead on Muddy Creek Mountain. She graduated from Ronceverte High School. Until her health declined, Betty was very active in her beloved Grace United Methodist Church in Fort Spring; serving in various volunteer capacities as well as teaching Sunday school for decades. She was also an active volunteer in the Farm Bureau, Farm Service Agency, and 4-H. Betty faithfully and selflessly cared for her elder siblings in their final years. She also served in various capacities in the U.S. Government in the 1960s. Above all, Betty loved Jesus and her family and her family loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elsie Coffman McVey and John H. McVey; her siblings, Eva C. McVey, John H. McVey, and H. Rodgers McVey (Gretis); nephews Howard Rogers McVey, Jr. (Jean), Marjorie Lobban (Charles), and Dr. James McVey (Charlotte); niece, Lois McVey; and nephew, Brian Anderson.
Betty is survived by great-nephews, H.R. McVey (Detra), Charles M. Lobban, Jr., Dr. John Lobban (Krista), James H. McVey, Jr. (Stephanie), and Will McVey (Rachel); great-nieces, Melissa McVey Cranwell (Rick), Lizabeth Lobban Rogers, Greta McVey (Cindy), Gail McVey Taylor (Doug), Kathy McVey Arbaugh (Jack), and Lori Lobban Anderson; as well as many other great-great nieces and nephews and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at River of Life Church of God in Alderson on Monday, Sept. 9, at 12 noon. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12, prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow in McVey-Stephens Cemetery in Fort Spring.
