Journalist Anna Sale will join the lineup of keynote speakers at the Lewisburg Literary Festival Saturday, Aug. 4, at 1 p.m. at Carnegie Hall.
Sale rose to prominence with the wild success of her podcast Death, Sex & Money, an interview show about “the big questions and hard choices often left out of polite conversation.” In 2015, New York Magazine named Death, Sex & Money the #1 podcast of the year. A year later Sale was honored with a Gracie for best podcast hose from the Alliance for Women in Media.
Sale is a West Virginia native, having graduated from George Washington High School in Charleston, WV before earning a degree in history from Stanford University. Currently she lives in Berkeley, CA, with her family.
Sale has interviewed personalities such as Jane Fonda, Bill Withers, Mahershala Ali, Alec Baldwic, Lucinda Williams, Kevin Bacon, Ellen Burstyn, and former Senator Alan Simpson. Prior to creating and hosting her award-winning podcast produced by WNYC Studios, Sale worked as a radio journalist covering politics for nine years. She has appeared as a commentator on MSNBC, CNN, the BBC, and PBS Newshour, and has been interviewed for Fresh Air with Terry Gross. Her reporting has also been heard on This American Life, NPR’s All Things Considered and Morning Edition, and Markeplace. Sale’s coverage has appeared in Slate and The Atlantic.
She describes her podcast as a show about “the things we think about a lot and need to talk about more.” Podcast listeners call Sale a “compassionate, attuned, and sensitive interviewer,” “smart, funny, and approachable.” Death, Sex & Money is “amazing, humanizing and heartening,” “always interesting and engaging, often moving,” with “intense, empathetic conversations that generously transcend the boundaries of ‘acceptable’ or correct.’”
