On May 29, American Legion Post 100 held a brief Memorial Day commemoration in Union. The event, now in its eighth year, consisted of an invocation, singing the National Anthem, remarks by Post 100 Commander Tim Sluss, recitation of Theodore O’Hara’s poem “Bivouac of the Dead” by Chris Johnson, a reading of Major General John A. Logan’s first official 1868 Memorial Day Proclamation by Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Scott E. Womack, a wreath and flower laying at the Veteran’s Memorial adjacent to the courthouse, and the playing of “Taps” after the National Moment of Silence at 3 p.m. This year’s event was scaled down due to inclement weather, but a few intrepid citizens came out anyway to remember those who paid the ultimate price to secure our liberties. Post 100 intends to continue this annual event to coincide with the national commemoration, and the public is always encouraged to attend.
