Allen “Al” Petrie, 83, passed away Thursday Aug. 14, 2025. He was surrounded by his family. A devoted father, proud Navy veteran, and man of deep faith he is survived by his brother Douglas, three beloved children – Craig, Michelle, and Jason – 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Later in life Al was reunited with his high school Sweetheart Tay, bringing two wonderful stepdaughters Sara and Kathy.

Born with a spirit of adventure and dedication, Al attended Greenbriar Military School before graduating from Campbell University. He then began a career in the Navy and earned his wings as a helicopter pilot in 1968. Over the course of his distinguished career, he completed seven cruises, including an expedition to Antarctica – where he playfully engaged with penguins during a cruise around the world. After more than two decades of service, Al retired as a Lieutenant Commander from the Navy in 1987.

Following his military career, Al found a new path as a real estate appraiser, working diligently until his second retirement. Never one to sit still, Al poured his energy into the things that mattered most: his faith, his family, and his community.

Al was deeply rooted in his Christian beliefs. He found joy in reading the Bible and sharing conversations with close friends. He was a man of many talents and curiosities. In his later years, Al took up the ukulele, banjo, and guitar. Known for always carrying a pocketknife, and ChapStick, he embodied practicality and preparedness in every walk of life.

Al will be remembered not only for his accomplishments, but for his warmth, and faith. His children, along with countless friends, church family, and all who knew him, will cherish his memory and the many stories he leaves behind.

A celebration of Al’s life will be held Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. at Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg, WV, where family and friends will gather to honor the remarkable man he was.
