Saint Francis of Assisi died on Oct. 3, 1226. After his death he became the Patron Saint of animals and the environment. Celebrations are held in October worldwide to honor animals and their importance in our lives.
On Saturday, Oct. 3, from 1 to 4 p.m., Alderson will be a part of this tradition. Join us on the Memorial Bridge and in Alumni Park with your favorite pets. There will be contests for the best Halloween costume for a dog or cat; best tail wag on a dog; most laid back cat. Small pets only (dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, hamsters). They must be on a leash or in a carrier.
At 3 p.m. there will be a blessing of the pets by Pastor Richard Lohmeyer. Alderson Veterinary Services will be giving rabies vaccines for $8 each. S&S Feed Store will have all kinds of pet goodies.
This is a fundraising event for Greenbrier County Humane Society and Animal Shelter plus the Alderson Animal Control. The Alderson Animal Control rescues feral cats; tames them; has them spade or neutered and given rabies shots; then adopts them out for $25. They have adopted out 70 cats in just over a year.
Here is a list of items needed: Dog/Cat/puppy/kitten treats or food, toys, towels/blankets, collars/leashes, litter (non-clumping), cat nip, Dawn dish soap, 13 gal. trash bags, paper towels, lint rollers, bleach, laundry detergent, dryer sheets. Money is also appreciated.
There will be a raffle of pet gift baskets to benefit these organizations. Sponsors of this event include Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, Alderson Veterinary Services, S&S Feed Store, Town of Alderson and Alderson Main Street.
