Wellspring of Greenbrier announced today that Executive Director Abigail Spangler and General Manager Josiah Spangler will step down from their day-to-day leadership roles. They will return to their bedside nursing careers while continuing their Faith Community Nursing work in West Virginia. During their three years of service, the Spanglers led Wellspring through a period of remarkable growth, strengthened systems, and increased community trust. Abby will remain engaged with Wellspring as a trusted advisor to support a smooth transition and the organization’s continued success.

Board member and retired NGO Executive Director Scott Miller has assumed interim leadership and is overseeing the search for a permanent Executive Director. “Wellspring’s founders, Fred and Scarlett Kellerman, built an effective model for supporting neighbors living on the margins,” Miller said. “At a crucial time, Abby and Josiah brought energy, heart, and professionalism—strengthening administrative practices, expanding financial support, and elevating Wellspring’s presence statewide. Their impact will continue to guide the organization forward.”

Under the Spanglers’ leadership, Wellspring became a recognized model of whole-person care, blending nutritious food distribution with advocacy and holistic health support. Their work deepened partnerships across Greenbrier County and strengthened Wellspring’s reputation as a compassionate, reliable community resource.

Operations Manager Liz Reynolds added, “Working with Abby and Josiah has been a privilege. They set a high standard of compassionate service, and we are committed to carrying that spirit forward.”

Wellspring’s service demand grew sharply during their tenure: from an average of 220 individuals served per distribution in 2022, to 350 in 2023, 450 in 2024, and nearly 600 individuals served just last week. The organization also expanded into a larger facility in June 2025 to better meet community needs. In 2024, the Greater Greenbrier Chamber of Commerce named Wellspring Nonprofit of the Year, recognizing its growth and impact.

Board Chair Frank Wheeler noted, “Abby and Josiah put their nursing careers on hold to lead Wellspring at a pivotal moment. They leave the organization stronger, more stable, and more hopeful than ever.”

Wellspring will share additional information on permanent leadership plans soon and invites continued community support during this transition.
