Carnegie Hall invites you to celebrate Appalachian craftsmanship in a full-day basket weaving workshop led by instructor Kathy Talley. On Friday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., participants will learn to create a sturdy, functional, and beautifully accented casserole basket – perfect for carrying homemade pies, picnic dishes, and church supper favorites. This class is part of Carnegie Hall’s Appalachian Heritage Series and highlights the region’s rich heritage of practical artistry.
Designed for beginners and open to all skill levels, the Church Supper Casserole Basket class will guide students through standard shaping and reed weaving techniques. Each basket will feature woven-in handles and decorative colored accent reed, allowing for personal flair and creativity. All materials and tools will be provided by the instructor, making it easy for newcomers to dive into the craft without prior experience.
The class is limited to 10 participants to ensure personalized instruction. The cost is $120 for Carnegie Hall members and $135 for nonmembers. Scholarships are available for students ages 16 and up, who may attend for just $60. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn a traditional skill, connect with fellow creatives, and leave with a handmade piece that’s both beautiful and useful.
