Fall Burning Restrictions Are Now In Effect
The West Virginia Division of Forestry says we are in the Fall Forest Fire Season. During the Forest Fire Seasons, March 1 to May 31, and Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, no open burning may be conducted during daylight hours between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., unless a burning permit is obtained from the Division of Forestry. The burning hours are actually based on the science of weather, in the evening after 5 p.m. the humidity usually goes up and the wind dies down. That’s why burning is allowed in the evenings from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. All fires must be ringed by 10 feet of barren soil and needs to be attended for the entire time it is burning. Having a hose nearby isn’t a bad idea. All fires shall be totally extinguished prior to 7 a.m. Residents caught burning between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. face citations and fines up to $1,000 and the cost could be far more if the fire gets out of hand and jumps onto other people’s property.
