State Treasurer Larry Pack announced today his Office’s Unclaimed Property Division completed more than 1,000 successful searches of unclaimed property totaling over $450,000 during the 100th anniversary of the State Fair of West Virginia in Greenbrier County.
“During last week’s State Fair, my team was able to connect with fairgoers and search our Unclaimed Property Database for any lost funds they had. I’m proud to announce there were 1,004 successful searches with a total number of $456,124 in unclaimed property funds that will be returned to these rightful owners,” Treasurer Pack said.
This was the first year the State Treasurer’s Office was able to officially track unclaimed property searches from the thousands of fairgoers who stopped by the State Fair of West Virginia from Aug. 7-16. The Office had set up a QR code to allow fairgoers to search the Unclaimed Property Database themselves.
“At times, there were as many as four people at a time conducting searches for their unclaimed property via our team or on their cell phones,” Treasurer Pack said. “This was by far the busiest and most productive year for our unclaimed property searches at the State Fair. As a result, the total number of claims could be greater than the $456,124 recorded.”
The Unclaimed Property Division returned a record of $40.6 million during the last fiscal year, topping the $28 million returned the previous year. In July, more than $1.8 million in unclaimed property was returned to individuals, businesses, and organizations.
The State Treasurer’s Office has more than $472 million worth of listings in its database.
