
The Monroe County Board of Education is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Jason B. Conaway as Superintendent of Monroe County Schools. This highly respected educational leader with more than 22 years of experience took his oath of office on Jul. 1 and will assume his duties immediately. With a strong record of leadership across K-12 and state-level roles, Dr. Conaway is recognized for his ability to lead strategic improvement efforts, build collaborative teams, and create student-focused systems that drive academic success.
Dr. Conaway holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) from Liberty University, where his dissertation focused on school leadership and inclusive practices for students with autism. He also holds multiple advanced degrees, including an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) in School Psychology and two Master’s Degrees in Elementary and Special Education from Marshall University and Concord University. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a specialization in Multi-Categorical Special Education from Fairmont State University. In addition, he holds certifications as a superintendent, principal, and director in both Virginia and West Virginia.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Conaway has served as a teacher, school psychologist, administrator, state department coordinator, college professor, and most recently as Director of Special Education, School Health, and Student Services for Alleghany Highlands Public Schools. He is a published author and frequent presenter at state and national conferences on topics such as trauma-informed leadership, behavior supports, and instructional strategies for diverse learners.
In 2024, he was honored with the Mary Lou Wall Award as Virginia’s Early Career Special Education Administrator of the Year, reflecting his dedication to advancing high-quality, inclusive education.
Dr. Conaway is married to his wife, Amy, a dedicated fifth-grade teacher at Ronceverte Elementary School in Greenbrier County. They are the proud parents of two children: Nathan, who will begin ninth grade this fall, and Emily, who will be entering sixth grade. The Conaway family is active in their faith community at Lewisburg United Methodist Church, where Dr. Conaway serves as a lay speaker. Outside of his professional life, he enjoys spending time outdoors – especially fishing, hiking, and staying active through regular workouts. He is also an avid sports fan who enjoys watching high school, college, and professional games, and especially looks forward to cheering on local student-athletes with his family.
As Superintendent, Dr. Conaway is committed to building on the district’s strengths by promoting academic excellence, expanding student services, and leading with transparency, innovation, and a deep respect for the voices of educators, families, and community partners.
