The General Andrew Lewis Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution met on May 15 at the home of Barb Hiltner. Those in attendance were Chaplain Beverly Boswell, Regent Suzanne Cronquist, Vice Regent Judy Deegans, Mary Fullen, Treasurer Barb Hiltner, Doris Kasley, Karen Lee McClung, Secretary Carol Olsen, Deborah Phillips, Marit Withrow, Ruth Sturgill, Jodie Nidey, and Addie Goodrich.

Dr. Kim McBride

The meeting was called to order by Regent Cronquist, the DAR Ritual was recited, and the Pledge of Allegiance was said. The meeting was then suspended to hear from the guest speaker, Dr. Kim McBride. She spoke to us as she was leaving to go to Fort Warwick in Greenbank for an archaeology dig she and her husband, Dr. Stephen McBride, are conducting. Fort Warwick was built in the summer of 1774 during Lord Dunmore’s War and used through the American Revolution. Militia were stationed there and settlers took refuge in the fort during raids by Native Americans. She demonstrated that archaeology is the best way to learn about the layout of the fort and the material culture in use by its occupants. Visitors were invited to watch and participate if desired. This event was supported by grants from the Appalachian National Forest Heritage Area and the Cal W. Price Appalachian Enrichment Series.  Dr. McBride is retired from the University of Kentucky School of Archaeology, and her presentation demonstrated she is an excellent teacher.

The meeting was resumed, and reports of the committee were presented. A wonderful ice cream and cookie treat was served by hostess Barb Hiltner and co-hostess Marit Withrow.
