Betty A. Hodge Fleshman

Alderson-Betty A. Hodge Fleshman, 90, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014, at 10 a.m. following a long illness.

She was born June 2, 1924, at Mt. View in McDowell County, the daughter of the late Minor C. Hodge and the late Cora Pitzer Hodge.

Mrs. Fleshman was of the Baptist faith, a longtime member and dedicated worker of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson. She was a member of the Ruth Thurmond Circle and voted Mother of the Year in 1989. She spent much time and effort cooking, carrying food to and visiting the sick and shut-in. She collected money for flowers for people who had a deaths in their family.

She was a loving, devoted wife and mother and a “home-maker” in every sense of the word. She loved to cook and sew and was best known for her quilt making and cake baking. She made hundreds of quilts that can be recalled to memory. If you were the recipient of one of her quilts, you know there was not only lots of color; many fine hand-sewn stitches and lots of thought and love put into each and every one of them followed through to the finest detail. She loved gardening, flowers, vegetables, and canned all her life to share with family, friends, and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by: her loving husband of 63 years, Howard R. Fleshman; eight brothers, George, Joe, John, Ted, Tommy, Alvie, Paul, and Bill; four sisters, Bernice Hodge, Irene Hartwell, Melva Meadows, and Leola Hodge; daughter-in-law, Sherry Lynn Richmond Fleshman; and great-granddaughter, Jasmine Carden.

Mrs. Fleshman is survived by: two sisters, Christine Lowry and Bonnie Lilly; three sons, Richard and wife Alice of Alderson, Royce and wife Sherry of Rainelle and Howie of Alderson; two daughters, Causby Parker and husband Ward of Alderson and Janet Bragg of Fredericksburg, VA; ten granddaughters, five grandsons, ten great-granddaughters and nine great-grandsons.

Service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg with Pastor Bill Bryan officiating.

Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Lewisburg.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to Hospice Care, 1265 Maplewood Avenue, Lewisburg, WV 24901.
