The Greenbrier County Commission met on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. The meeting began with an approval of minutes from the Jan. 14 meeting. Regarding financial approvals, there was an Arts and Recreation transfer approval of $5,081.56, which is the 2024-2-25 grant for the second quarter for Rainelle and Rupert, $69,300 for Phase 3 of the Meadow River Trail in AML grant reimbursement, and $400 for Alderson Main St for their 2024-2025 programming for a total of $74,781.56 to be transferred from savings to checking.
For new business, there was a presentation of funds as a pass-thru from Jim Justice’s office in the amount of $250,000 for the pre-production of the Blue Demons movie, which will portray their impact on the coal mining community in Northfork. The Blue Demons were the basketball team at Northfork High School in McDowell County, West Virginia. The team was known for winning eight consecutive state championships from 1974-1981. The Blue Demons’ accomplishments brought national attention to the small coal-mining town of Northfork. It was approved that the commission would serve as the pass-thru for The Blue Demons pre-production in the amount of $250,000.
Next was an additional presentation of funds as a pass-thru from the West Virginia Local Economic Development Assistance Grant to the Oregon Cave Community Center. It was approved that the commission would serve as the pass-thru for the grant in the amount of $3,690. Following the presentation of pass-thru funds was the consideration of the employment status of Donnie Honaker, a security officer, from part-time to full-time; this consideration was approved with the status change going into effect on Feb. 11. Lastly, Consideration of Resolution #8 for the Greenbrier County PSD #2 Waterline Extension Project; to complete the payment of the design work. The payment of $131,559.97 was approved.
The next meeting of the Commission will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m.
