In the morning hours of Monday, Jan. 6, deputies with the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call for a shooting located at 894 Anderson Road in Lewisburg. Dispatchers reported that a male had called in stating that he had shot his mother “because he was angry.”
Deputies arriving on the scene found Andrew Yancy Gabbert, 33, outside the residence in the front yard, where he was detained. He told officers that he had shot his mother because he was mad, as well as “the voices.”
Andrew’s mother, Shirley Gabbert, 72, was found deceased inside the residence from an apparent gunshot wound. The crime scene team processed the scene and located a .380 caliber handgun on a computer desk in the living room “along with large pools of blood.” It was determined that the accused allegedly shot his mother and moved her body to the floor before washing up in the bathroom sink, changing clothes, and calling 911.
Andrew was taken into custody without incident, processed, and transported to Southern Regional Jail.
The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Team responded and processed the scene. The lead investigators for the Sheriff’s Office are Lt. Gary Workman and Sgt. Brandon McCormick. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
The Sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the Lewisburg Police Department, the Lewisburg Fire Department and the Greenbrier County Emergency Ambulance Service.
