The Pocahontas County Opera House is thrilled to announce a special performance by The Onlies on Friday, Oct. 25, as part of the 25th anniversary season.
The Onlies, a dynamic group of musicians from Seattle and Lexington, VA, will bring their unique blend of fiddles, guitars, and banjos to the historic stage. The ensemble – comprising Sami Braman, Riley Calcagno, Vivian Leva, and Leo Shannon – is known for their spirited and modern take on traditional American old-time music. Long-time patrons might remember Calcagno and Leva from their previous memorable performance at the Opera House, and we are eager to welcome them back with their full band. Their latest self-titled album highlights their dedication to both preserving and innovating within the genre, with energetic drive, intricate arrangements, and unforgettable melodies.
Mary Sue Burns, a dedicated board member and chair of the programming committee at the Pocahontas County Opera House, expressed her admiration for the group: “The Onlies take a classic old-time tune like ‘Billy in the Lowground,’ traditionally played in the key of C, and reimagine it in the key of A using calico tuning, performed at an exhilarating pace. This modern twist on a traditional tune truly sets them apart. They are exceptionally talented, not only excelling in old-time music but also in crafting their own original songs.”
With an extensive touring history across the United States, The Onlies have shared the stage with musical luminaries such as Bruce Molsky, Elvis Costello, and Darol Anger. The band’s dedication to their craft earned them first place at the Clifftop Appalachian Stringband Festival in 2017. This upcoming concert promises an evening filled with spirited music and entertainment, suitable for the entire family.
The performance is set for Friday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Pocahontas County Opera House. Special accommodations are available upon request to ensure everyone can enjoy the evening. Seating follows a first-come, first-served policy, and patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance for the best available seats.
Tickets are available for a $10 donation for adults, with free admission for those aged 17 and under. Tickets can be purchased online at pocahontasoperahouse.org, in person at the 4th Avenue Gallery in Marlinton, or at the Opera House on the evening of the performance.
