The Master Gardner’s Demonstration Garden at the West Virginia State Fair features All-America Selection (AAS) plants. The AAS is an organization that tests new, never before sold varieties for home gardeners. These plants have been started by seeds by volunteer horticultural professionals and the top performers are given the AAS award designation for their superior performance. Performance standards that are evaluated are in areas of ease and success of seed germination as well disease resistance, quality of vegetable, and attractiveness. The seeds are submitted by people and companies from all over the world.
In the Demo Garden this year, a special area has been devoted to highlighting these award winners. Master gardeners Donna Miles and Willa Rizzo have been diligently starting and tending to these seeds at their homes, then transplanting and caring for them in the Demo Garden. Come on out to the Demo Garden at the West Virginia State Fair to see the fruits of their labor. The AAS plants are not only the best of the new varieties of plants but are readily available and easy for home gardeners to grow.
