Body Butter

Carnegie Hall’s Classes & Workshops Series offers many different learning opportunities for all ages, taught by regional artists. Herbal Arts instructor Tommy Rafes’ classes have become some of the most attended for the series, offering something different, fun, and practical. This spring she is teaching students how to make Natural Liquid Soap, Body Butter, and Natural Shampoo Bars. Limited Scholarships are available for students 50 years of age and older and all materials are provided.

Rafes’ first workshop is Soap Making for the Natural Home on Friday, May 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. Students will learn how to make an all-natural liquid hand wash that benefits both the skin and the environment.

“If you are trying to avoid harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances that may cause skin irritation, then you might enjoy learning how to make an all-natural liquid hand wash that is perfect for individuals with sensitive skin,” explains Carnegie Hall Education Director Harmony Flora.

The class will also discuss how natural hand washes use biodegradable ingredients, minimizing the environmental impact on our local water systems. Students will make two different formulas to try while discussing various options for ingredients to try at home.

On Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Rafes will teach a Body Butter making class. Students will learn how to create body butter that is luxurious as well as an effective solution for promoting skin hydration and health.

Body Butter is typically a thick cream made of nut butters, skin moisturizing oils, and a fragrance. Each butter is unique and offers different textures, absorbency, and viscosity. In class, students will learn how to formulate body butter to help protect skin from dryness and rough skin.

Rafes last workshop on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., will teach students how to make Natural Shampoo Bars using an easy-to-follow recipe. Solid shampoo bars are an excellent choice for those trying to reduce their use of plastics while also looking for a natural product without the use of harsh chemicals.
