Yes, cicadas are coming! But not to our backyard.
We have been seeing lots of media circulating about the upcoming cicada year. This year will be special for some in the United States with the emergence of two broods simultaneously. But it won’t be happening in Greenbrier County, or West Virginia for that matter.
This years’ broods are 19 (aka great southern brood) and 13. Brood 19 is a 13 year cicada which will emerge in many of the states to the south and south west of West Virginia. Brood 13 is a 17 year cicada which will emerge in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. So if you are a cicada hater you have a few more years to wait. If you love these amazing summer serenaders the best chance of getting to hear both broods at once will be in Springfield, Illinois.
Make your plans now, because it won’t happen again for another 200 years.
