A warm welcome was extended to Vice Regent Judy Deegans by Ruann Handy, Chief of the VA Center for Development and Civic Engagement at the VA Medical Center in Beckley, when she and her husband, Skip, arrived the morning of Dec. 10 with a delivery of new clothing and toiletries donated by the members of the General Andrew Lewis Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Handy said, “It is always a pleasure to see you come with your gifts from the DAR in Lewisburg. Everything the members donate is always needed and easy to put to good use.”
There are always volunteers on duty to assist with the unloading of the gifts for the men and women who served their country. Jay Mitchell and Reggie Roles helped carry the bags inside. Mitchell said he had been volunteering there for 13 years. The DAR members begin in October to buy for the veterans. They are then delivered to the VA Hospital in early December.
This year, the contribution of the clothing, throws and toiletries amounted to $1,163, and are distributed to patients and veterans in need, including the homeless veterans. The members of the General Andrew Lewis Chapter do this again in the spring.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a non-profit, nonpolitical women’s service organization whose main objectives are historic preservation, education and patriotism. Members are all lineal descendants of those who supported the cause of independence in the Revolutionary War back in 1776.
