Discover your roots: Greenbrier Historical Society & North House Museum present Intro into Genealogy Research

The Greenbrier Historical Society and North House Museum are thrilled to announce an exciting event for all history enthusiasts and those curious about their family heritage. Join GHS for an Intro to Genealogy Research workshop, a beginner’s workshop designed to unlock the secrets of your ancestry and how to use the resources at your disposal. This event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. upstairs in the historic Law Library, located on Courtney Drive, Lewisburg.
During the workshop, attendees will be guided through the fundamental principles of genealogical research, including:
● Genealogy 101: The workshop will give attendees an overview of genealogy, explain its significance, and highlight the value of understanding our ancestors’ stories. Participants will learn the basics of family tree construction and the process of tracing lineage.
● Getting Started: This session will guide attendees through the initial steps of genealogical research. From gathering information within the family to organizing data, participants will learn to create a solid foundation for their genealogical journey.
● Exploring Resources: The Greenbrier Historical Society’s genealogy experts will share valuable insights into a wide array of resources available for research. Participants will learn about online databases, historical archives, and other valuable repositories of genealogical information.
● Q&A Session: The workshop will conclude with a Q&A session, where participants can seek advice from the archivists and address any specific challenges or queries they may encounter during their research.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to interact with fellow genealogy enthusiasts, share stories, and exchange ideas. This workshop is the first of a planned series, with more advanced research strategies and techniques to be covered in later sessions. Participants are encouraged to take notes and give feedback on future workshops they would like to see.
Spaces for this workshop are limited, so early registration is encouraged. This workshop is taking place on the top floor of a historical building that is not ADA compliant – please let us know if you will need special accommodations, as this location requires stairs and is not wheelchair accessible.
