Greenbrier East High School was the Grand Slam winner of the annual Capital City Pumpkin Drop, held at Bridge Valley Community and Technical College in Charleston on Oct. 26. Physics students, sponsored by physics and chemistry teacher Barbara McElwain, were joined by Shane Hanna’s Health Sciences and Technical Academy (HSTA) students, Josie Hanna and Alysan Miller, to attend the pumpkin drop.
According to McElwain, the goal of the pumpkin drop is for students to design and build a protective structure to protect a pumpkin from a high fall. The pumpkin should hit the bull’s eye on the ground and stay intact during impact.
GEHS had three pumpkin survivors, and all three hit the center target. The weight of the containers determined the final winners; the GEHS team who had designed the lightest weight container won the Grand Slam.
Grand Slam Winners are Neely Seams, Ella Essig-Beatty, Amaya Evans and Allegra Browne.
Taylor Hill and Kaityln Mize won Most Sustainable Design. The HSTA team, consisting of Hanna and Miller, was recognized for an honorable mention for their display, “Capturing Compression,” detailing the design elements of their entry.
Eastern Greenbrier Middle School Students also participated and were recognized for the most creative design.
