On First Fridays After Five on Nov. 7 from 5-9 p.m., local artist Emily Coleman will unveil her show “Hey Baby … What’s Your Sign” at Washington Street Gallery. This fashion-based art show presents her latest creations influenced by the Zodiac.
Inspired by women and their astrological signs, each piece is presented on birch plywood using non-conventional elements such as tree bark, gemstones, pressed plants, feathers, tissue paper, crystals, leather, re-purposed jewelry elements, fabric and pearls, as well as traditional painting and metal leafing. Combined, these elements create a visually powerful presentation of the beauty and strength of women. “I want to celebrate the beauty that is in each and every woman. Maybe not to be a realistic representation, but to capture the feeling and emotions attributed to the sign,” says Coleman.
To add to the ambiance and the fashion focus of the show, Coleman encourages women to dress for the occasion and for their astrological sign.
Coleman is well known in the region for her numerous commissioned portraits, bird paintings and use of unconventional materials. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in illustration, awarded with honors, with a minor in photography from Virginia Commonwealth University. Emily’s influences are Mucha, Klimt, Vargas, Parish and pin-up photography. She works primarily with acrylics, although it is not unusual to find depth and texture created with metallic leafing, inks, paper and various integrated materials.
