New River CTC Cosmetology Students Need a Few Shaggy Men
One of the most important aspects of the cosmetology program at the New River Community and College Greenbrier Valley Campus is the hands-on experience students receive by providing services to members of the community. The community benefits too, because services are offered at reduced rates.
The students have no problem finding women to practice their artistry on, but there is a serious shortage of male models. According to Program Director Lisa Carter, men’s hair cutting can be a real undertaking for the cosmetology student. Shorter hair requires more precision work, especially around the ears and the neckline. Working with clippers also poses its own set of challenges. Students need more hands-on experiences with choosing the right guard on the clipper, as well as working with scissor over comb techniques.
To help recruit more men, the program is offering a Men’s Free Friday special on the third Friday of each month. On those days, males over 12 years of age can make an appointment and get their hair cut for free. The first Free Friday is set for Oct. 17.
The students offer a wide range of hair and nail services, including haircuts and styling, coloring, permanents, long hair spiral wraps, manicures, pedicures, and acrylic or sculptured nails.
The New River CTC cosmetology program currently is offered only at the Greenbrier Valley Campus. Students can complete a two-year cosmetology associate degree program or opt for shorter nail technician and esthetics certificate programs.
The Cosmetology lab is located on the ground floor of Greenbrier Hall on the Greenbrier Valley Campus at 101 Church Street in Lewisburg. Appointments are available between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. For an appointment, call 304-793-3009.
