Manchin urges WV students to apply for Service Academy nominations

This week, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) strongly encouraged West Virginia students who are interested in military service to apply for a nomination to one of the United States Service Academies, which include the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, and the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. Applicants must be high school seniors and demonstrate a commitment to education and athletic achievements. A congressional nomination is needed for a Service Academy appointment. The deadline to apply is Oct. 31.

“West Virginia has built a reputation of service and sacrifice, and I truly believe we are the most patriotic state in the nation,” Senator Manchin said. “So for those bright young men and women who feel a calling to serve and who are serious about duty, honor, commitment and our country – I strongly urge you to apply for the opportunity to serve and become a part of this proud tradition. I look forward to reviewing the applications and helping our West Virginia students reach America’s esteemed institutions – whether it is U.S. Air Force, Military, Naval or Merchant Marine Academy.”

Senator Manchin is limited to the number of nominations that he can submit each year. He will consider each candidate for a nomination to fill vacancies to selected academies. Once selected, Senator Manchin’s nominations will be submitted to the service academies by Dec. 31. Academy officials then have the responsibility to appoint nominees based on their competitive evaluation.

All required information must be submitted by Oct. 31, to the following address, email address or fax:

Attn: Academy Coordinator, United States Senator Joe Manchin III, 900 Pennsylvania Avenue, Suite 629, Charleston, WV 25302

Email: academy@manchin.senate.gov or fax 304-343-7144

Please find the Application for a Service Academy Nomination as well as the Service Academy Nomination Checklist on Senator Manchin’s website. http://www.manchin.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/service-academy-nominations.
