Elsie Worthman Gilkerson Eppling

Corbin, Ky-Elsie, 78, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at the Christian Health Center in Corbin, Kentucky.

Elsie was born July 13, 1936, at Green’s Harbour, Newfoundland, Canada and was the daughter of the late Samuel and Margaret Worthman.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bennie I. Eppling of Waiteville.

Elsie is a member of the Canadian Hall of Fame for the 1958 Royal Regatta rowing crew’s record that has never been broken. She was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1993. She was a retired seamstress working in New Castle, VA and prior seamstress in Rainelle. Elsie spent most of her life in West Virginia including Rainelle and Waiteville until falling ill and moving to Corbin, KY.

Elsie was preceded in death by her brother Will and her infant son Samuel.

She is survived by: sister, Emmie Rolfe and brother Ralph Worthman both of Newfoundland, Canada; five daughters, Yvonne Thorne (husband Gary) of Newfoundland Canada, Brenda Toni of Beckley, Charlette Hunter of Williamsburg, Jean Scruggs (husband Steve) of Corbin, KY and June Sprouse of Lewisburg; eight grandchildren, Neil and Ryan Thorne, Kimberly and Kathleen Crouch, Amanda Cannon and LaTasha Hunter, Stephen Scruggs Jr., and Jennifer Sprouse; five great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Shelby Jennings (husband Rick), Barry Eppling (wife Renee), Joyce Mundy (husband Joe) and Karen Duck (husband Galaspa) and three grandchildren (Jason Mundy, Rachel and Allison Eppling) and two great-grandchildren all from her second marriage to Bennie Eppling.

A memorial for Elsie will be held at a later date as her remains will be transported to Newfoundland Canada by her children as it was her final wish to be placed with her mother and father.
