The White Sulphur Springs Public Library will hold a Back-to-School Fair on Friday Aug. 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. The library will offer families of school children a complimentary hot dog supper, a chance to win a book bag with school supplies, free child haircuts and the opportunity to meet with several local organizations who can help children succeed in school. These organizations include GreenRiver Academy, Communities in Schools, representatives from local health business, D.A.R.E. and Librarian/library clerks.
The library will also take the opportunity to commemorate one of White Sulphur Springs favorite’s citizens, Mrs. Katherine Coleman Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 for her work at NASA. John Glenn is reported to have asked Mrs. Johnson to check the computer’s calculations before his historic flight into space. Mrs. Johnson was a firm believer in education. Her family moved, so that she and her siblings could attend high school and college. We hope to honor her commitment to learning by helping the next generation with their quest for knowledge. During the fair, posters will be hung in the library highlighting Mrs. Johnson’s accomplishments.
Please contact the library at 304-536-1171 with any questions. The library is located at 344 West Main Street in White Sulphur Springs. Face coverings are appreciated.
