Race Matters, in conjunction with its upcoming Community Block party on Saturday, Aug. 28 will celebrate the 58th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic march on Washington. A special part of this community gathering will focus on the nationwide rally to gather support to saving democracy and free elections. Race Matters has invited guest speakers to share important information concerning these matters. This segment of the day will take place from 12 noon to 1 p.m.

Race Matters has partnered with March on for Voting Rights, a nationwide mass mobilization to demand that elected officials protect democracy, denounce voter suppression and ensure fair, easy access to the Vote for All.  Elsewhere around the United States, marches will take place on Aug. 28 to demand legislatures across the country end their push for restrictive voting laws and that Congress pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Restoration Act, which will ensure free, fair access to the ballot for every voter.

In addition to Lewisburg, special events and marches will also take place in Atlanta, Houston, Miami, Phoenix, Washington, DC, and in more than 40 other cities around the country. March on for Voting Rights is co-sponsored by March On, SEIU, National Action Network and the Drum Major Institute, an organization founded by Martin Luther King Jr. and dedicated to the King legacy of addressing racism through peaceful solutions. The Community Block Party will take place from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Dorie Miller Park, located at Feamster Road, Lewisburg. The event will consist of food, family entertainment, games, music and educational/medical booths. A live auction will take place at 7 p.m. Come dance with your community friends and neighbors to the music of Marshall Petty, Dark Matters, and other local musicians. Social distancing and mask wearing is highly encouraged all day.  In the event Gov. Justice prohibits large outdoor gatherings, the block partywill have to be rescheduled. Check your local news outlets and the Facebook event listing should this occur. For additional information on the Community Block Party, contact lorettayoung26@gmail.com or call 304-610-6834.
