The West Virginia University Extension Service of Greenbrier County is offering classes this fall to those who wish to become Master Gardeners. The classes will start on Thursday, Sept. 4 and continue once a week on Thursday evenings until Nov. 6. The classes are scheduled from 6 until 9 p.m. at the West Virginia University building on the fairgrounds in Fairlea. Class topics include basic botany, plant diseases, entomology, soils and fertilizers, vegetable growing, fruit tree management, and pruning, among other subjects.
Once classes are completed, new Master Gardeners will have a year to complete 30 volunteer hours which can be earned participating in a variety of activities from working in the Demonstration Garden at the fairgrounds to volunteering for a number of other gardening projects in the community and in the local schools.
Class size is limited, so anyone interested in signing up for the series of ten classes should do so as soon as possible. Registration for the classes is being taken care of by the Greenbrier County Extension Office at 304-647-7408.
