For anyone who has ever walked around downtown Lewisburg wondering where they might find a delicious meal prepared with fresh local food, Greenbrier Valley Grown (GVG) has just made your life a little easier. GVG created a rack card with the names and contact information of restaurants, retail stores and farmers’ markets that are certified Greenbrier Valley Grown. With this new rack card in hand, you have all the information you need to make a dinner reservation at one of the seven GVG-certified local eateries, walk to Bella the Corner Gourmet or Edith’s Store to pick up GVG-certified bacon and eggs for Sunday breakfast at home, or find local farmers’ markets.
GVG is a program of the Greenbrier Valley Local Foods Initiative whose goal is to bridge the gap between producer and consumer while supporting the development of the local food economy of the Greenbrier Valley.
The Greenbrier Valley Grown certification certifies that food is truly local. GVG offers certification standards for producers, restaurants, value-added products, retail stores and farmers’ markets. GVG currently has seven certified restaurants, four retail stores and four farmers markets, in addition to the 32 certified growers. “The growing number of local food businesses in town is really encouraging. It means that we are starting to create more economic opportunity for farmers in this historically agricultural region,” said Kim Forte, an Americorps VISTA at the Greenbrier Valley Local Foods Initiative.
