Observing the 60th anniversary of overnight camping at the Greenbrier Youth Camp at Anthony, the first Board of Trustees Honor Luncheon was held June 22 in the dining room of the Camp. Fifteen supporters of the camp, past and present, were named to the Roll of Honor for the Camp, bringing a total of 47 now on the Roll.
Honored at the dinner and presented plaques were: Shirl Montgomery of Maxwelton; Lucie T. Refsland, Lewisburg; Betty McVey Shields, Muddy Creek Mountain, Alderson, Richard E. “Dick” Ford, Sr., Lewisburg; Linda Kidd Rodgers, representing her late father, Earl W. Kidd of Frankford; William F. Dixon, Fairlea; Janet Hoover Johnson, Lewisburg; Martha L. Workman, Renick; Mary Lou Tuckwiller, Lewisburg; H.R. McVey of Alderson, representing the late John McVey of Alderson; John B. Arbuckle, Jr. of Lewisburg and Emilee Cooke Hinzman of Lewisburg. Honored posthumously were Robert “Bob” Cooke, Sr., Hazel Humphreys, Earl W. Kidd, John McVey and Cedric F. Snedegar. The plaque honoring Hazel Humphreys will be placed in the Organ Cave Community Center, the heart of her home community.
James E. Johnson of Alderson who, as 4-H Agent, helped supervise 4-H members in the spring and summer of 1953 clear the land and then supervised the first over-night camps in 1954, presented the awards on behalf of the Board of Managers and the Board of Trustees.
Prior to the announcement of the Roll of Honor honorees, Lucie T. Refsland as president of the Board, presented the welcome and Larry Cordell, camp manager, presented the overall view of the camp and challenges the camp faced in his manager’s report.
Johnson, in introducing the honorees, noted the recipients had helped the camp through physical labor, support of projects, financial assistance and fund raising and the Class of 2014 had a total of some 400 years of time, talent and money in support of the camp.
A spaghetti dinner was served to the Board of Trustees and guests by the camp staff and tours of the camp concluded the event.
The Greenbrier Youth Camp is located on the Frankford-Anthony-Blue Bend-Alvon Road in the Monongahela National Forest and is supported by public donations and fundraising events such as the Family Fun Day being held at the State Fairgrounds in Fairlea July 19th.
The permanent Roll of Honor plaque is located in the assembly hall of the camp.
