Two students from Frankford Elementary School earned first place at the West Virginia State Social Studies Fair, held at the Charleston Civic Center on Apr. 11. Bridgette Altizer, a 4th grader, and Paige Altizer, a 3rd grader, advanced to the state competition after winning first place at the Frankford Elementary school level competition, the Greenbrier County competition held at Eastern Greenbrier Middle School, and the regional competition held at Pocahontas County High School.
The West Virginia Social Studies Fair was developed in order to foster learning a variety of in-depth social studies topics and inspire preparation for becoming participating citizens in society. The program is extremely competitive and the judging criteria is strict. The Altizer sisters chose Anthropology and focused their research on early Cherokee culture. In order to compete, they were required to develop a display and written answers to a series of questions, and they were judged on their ability to present the content of their research and to answer questions about their project at each level of the competition. It was an impressive accomplishment, and their family is very proud of them.
