Forest service offers firewood permits at Marlinton office; appointment required for purchasing

Monongahela National Forest is offering firewood permits for purchase at the District Office in Marlinton. The permits allow for gathering firewood at the Beale Hacking Range Allotment, on Buzzard Ridge near Slatyfork. Permit holders will receive a map of the area and specific instructions when they purchase the permit.

The permit costs $20 and allows for cutting up to five standard cords of firewood. Standing trees may not be cut. This firewood is for personal use only and may not be sold or used commercially. Avoid the Beale Hacking Range Allotment during or immediately after heavy rain to minimize resource damage.

This firewood is available on the grazing allotment as the result of the creation of cutback borders, which mimic early successional habitat and benefit species such as turkey, ruffed grouse, and deer. Cutback borders provide a gradual, more natural transition from forest to grassland, instead of an abrupt edge.

Call the Marlinton-White Sulphur Ranger District at 304-799-4334 for more information and to make an appointment.

For more information about firewood permits in other areas of the Forest visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/mnf/passes-permits/?cid=fseprd597451.
