Alderson-Lucy Mae Ballard Smith, 93, died Sunday, July 26, 2020, at her home in Alderson, following a long illness.

Born July 8, 1927, in Airpoint, VA, she was the daughter of the late Charles Campbell and Louella Waldron Ballard.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Edward “Eddie” Smith; her daughter, Tammy Smith Skaggs; four brothers, Henry Ike “Bunt” Ballard, Campbell Straton “Strat” Ballard, John Coles Ballard, and Patrick Whittle Ballard; five sisters, Anna Lea Mann, Nelly Gray “Nell” Long, Lilly Belle “Lil” Page, Hazel Grace Heath, and Fanny Lorene Ganoe; and special niece, Evelyn Miller Eary.

Mrs. Smith worked at Alderson’s Store in Alderson for many years and was a homemaker. She graduated from Peterstown High School in Peterstown and was a member of the Alderson Presbyterian Church in Alderson. Mrs. Smith was an accomplished seamstress and artist. She especially loved children and always had candy for any visiting her home. She baked and decorated many birthday cakes over the years and sewed many costumes for children. Her Halloween decorations were phenomenal. Nobody loved a good joke more than Lucy Mae.

Survivors include her son-in-law, Ernest Lee Skaggs, Jr. of Alderson, with whom she made her home; three special nieces, Mildred Grizzard of Durham, NC, Betty Groves and husband Sam of Alderson, and Vicky Ambler and husband George “Boogie” of Fort Spring; and many nieces and nephews.

The family of Mrs. Smith would like to thank all of her caregivers, Michelle Holcomb, Jo Ann Smith, Jennifer Bowden, Kathy Longanacre, Bethany Parkin, and Lori Still, for the wonderful care that they all provided over the last few years.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CDC guidelines will be observed, with mask and social distancing encouraged.

Graveside services and burial will be held on Friday, July 31, at 3:00 p.m. at the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery in Alderson with the Rev. Sam Groves officiating. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

For those considering an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alderson Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 126, Alderson, WV 24910.

Online condolences and memories may be shared with the Smith family at www.lobbanfh.com.

Arrangements by Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.
