Western Greenbrier Middle School was the scene of a bomb threat at lunchtime on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
No explosives were found during a search by state troopers that included bomb-sniffing dogs. Teachers and nearly 330 students were evacuated to Greenbrier West High School while the search was conducted.
According to Chief Deputy Bruce Sloan of the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department, the bomb threat was in a note found by a student in a classroom at the middle school. A juvenile has been arrested in the case. While the exact charge has not been released, the student could be charged with Terroristic Threats.
“We contacted state and local law enforcement immediately, said Greenbrier County Superintendent of Schools Sallie Dalton, after WGMS Principal Ben Routson notified her of the threat just after 11 a.m. The State Police troopers were at the school within 10 minutes of receiving the call.
Greenbrier County Sheriffs deputies, West Virginia State Police officers and the State Police’s bombsniffing dog searched the premises. The search concluded around 3 p.m. with no suspicious items or substances found, Sloan said.
“We have to take all precautions when something like this happens,” he noted.
