At the 2019 West Virginia Garden Club meeting, the Bluebell Garden Club and the Lewisburg Garden Club were awarded the McDonald Award for Historic Preservation.
The award recognizes the clubs’ efforts in the use of plantings and restoration at Old Stone Cemetery. The award is designated for garden clubs that complete historic preservation projects which restore a garden of importance to the heritage of a specific locality. Through the use of landscaping design these two clubs selected plantings that are authentic to the locality and follow the rules related to plantings of the period. These enhancements protect the monuments of the cemetery and improve the appearance of the grounds. Old Stone Cemetery is frequently visited by locals and tourists examining the area history or looking for family graves. The projects were completed in consultation with the preservation group Friends of Old Stone Cemetery.
