Twenty-one members of the Class of 2019 performed the final concert as members of the Spartan Concert Band, Greenbrier East Steel Drum Ensemble, and the Spartan Marching Band in the annual Spring Concert of the instrument music department at Greenbrier East High School on Tuesday evening, May 14.
Performances were given by the Spartan Concert Band, which just received all superior ratings from judges in the Kennywood Park “Music in the Park” competition this past weekend in Pittsburgh, PA, where Greenbrier East scored the highest point total of all participating bands from the three-state region.
Also performing were members of the Greenbrier East Steel Drum Ensemble, the 2nd Block Rock Ensemble, and the Spartan Marching Band, which performed the music from their competition field show, “Clue,” as well as a selection from the field show, “Back to the Future” which was the show the year this year’s seniors were freshmen.
During the evening, special awards were presented including the Bob Johnson Memorial
“Spirit of the Band” awards, the highest honor given by the Spartan Band, which was presented to Courtney Martin and Stanley Ciciora.
Receiving the musicianship awards were Victoria Rose, Gabriella Gill, Adam Miller, Galadriel Donahue, and Michael Tetreault while the dedication to the band awards went to Ileya Westmoreland, Alex Buly, Anne Lindbergh, Seth Griffin, and Austin Workman.
Earning the service awards for above and beyond assistance to the instrumental music department were Kenneth Morgan, Carrington McCray, and Bryan Doherty and the leadership awards were presented to Ciciora and Martin, the field conductors for the Spartan Marching Band.
Also honored were Bailey Withrow and Georgia Foster as “Color Guard Leaders of the Year” and Ileya Westmoreland and Will Cumbie as Steel Drum Ensemble “Outstanding Participants” for 2019.
Members of the Class of 2019 performing as members of the Spartan Bands for the final time were Sophie Bowes, Alex Buly, Stanley Ciciora, Rhiannon Cohernour, Will Cumbie, Brian Doherty, Galadriel Donahue, Georgia Foster, Josie Gilbert, Gabriella Gill, Seth Griffin, Anne Lindbergh, Courtney Martin, Carrington McCray, Adam Miller, Kenneth Morgan, Airianna Nettles, Victoria Rose, Michael Tetreaule, Ileya Westmoreland, Bailey Withrow, Austin Workman, and Isaiah Workman.
Strong supporters of the instrumental music department are members of the Greenbrier East Music Boosters with Jeff Jasperse, president, who join Director James Allder of the Instrumental Music Department in presenting the Margaret Hefner Memorial Band Booster of the Year award to Paul Ciciora who, with his wife, prepared much of the meals served to the band members before each home game, on the road before or after field competitions in addition to chaperoning band trips and overnight stays and working musically with members of the band.
The program concluded with the performing for one final time the Greenbrier East fight song, “Days of Glory.”
Underclassmen in the Spartan Marching Band will perform for the Greenbrier East High School Commencement Exercises at the State Fairgrounds on May 31, and an alumni band is being organized to perform during the Greenbrier East High School Half a Century All School Reunion June 27-29. The alumni band will perform for the alumni basketball game on June 27 and in the Reunion parade on June 29 in downtown Lewisburg.
