Lewisburg-Loretta Gray Cohernour, 86, passed peacefully from this world to the next at The Brier Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, Nov. 17.
Loretta was born Sept. 18, 1932 at Esty, WV. She was the seventh of eight children born to Thomas Franklin Cohenour and Rosa Lee Cohenour Cohenour.
In addition to her parents Loretta was preceded in death by siblings, Olive Poe, Dwayne Cohernour, Ray Cohenour, Bob Cohenour, Edna Phillips, Everette “Boley” Cohenour and Frankie Cohenour.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Dorothy Rita of Winchester, VA, Cuma Flory of Statesville, NC and her son Mark Gragg, his father Blaine Gragg, and Mark’s daughter Austin Gragg; Roger McMillion of Clintonville; Bobby Cohernour of Charleston; Ronnie Cohernour of Renick; Joyce Phillips of Roanoke, VA, Frank Phillips of Elkins; and Loretta’s sister-in-law, Janet Saunders of Lewisburg.
Loretta spent all of her life caring for her family, and was a gifted seamstress spending many years making special order clothing, upholstering furniture and worked for several years at the Kellwood company. She and her sister, Frankie, cared for children in their home for over 40 years. Literally hundreds of children in the Lewisburg area remember Frankie and Loretta as their baby-sitters from early childhood and their families remained loving friends to Loretta in her later years. Frankie, and Loretta were members of the Calvary / Lewisburg Baptist Church where they faithfully cared for children in the church nursery for over 50 years. Loretta spent the last six years of her life living at Lewisburg Manor Senior Retirement apartments.
A celebration of Loretta’s life was held on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg. Fellowship and family visitation was held prior to the service. Internment was in Rosewood cemetery in Lewisburg following the service.
