Last week, the halls of the Greenbrier Resort were filled with visitors that contrasted from the usual hotel patrons: gamers.
Bethesda Game Studios, one of the most notable video game developers in the world, held a special event at the hotel in honor of the upcoming release of their newest game, Fallout 76. Attendees were given exclusive access to an early version of the game, and were able to play in one of the ballrooms that had been set up with screens and gaming consoles.
The Fallout franchise is a multimillion dollar grossing game series set in a post-apocalyptic 1950’s style America. Players must scavenge around the wasteland left behind after a nuclear fallout in order to survive, fighting off mutant animals and rogue groups of raiders. The series has released eight games so far, Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout Shelter, and Fallout 4. Fallout 76 will be set entirely in the state of West Virginia, and will feature maps of popular locations from around the state, including the Greenbrier Resort and the city of Lewisburg.
One of the ballrooms at The Greenbrier was used as a gaming station for the Fallout 76 event, as exclusive insiders got access to an early version of the game.
In select videos of game play, glimpses around the hotel are visible. The decor around the resort appears to be relatively accurate, and it’s clear that the developers took the time to incorporate details from the actual hotel into the game. The hallway containing The Greenbrier shops is seen, as well as the concierge desk and the grand piano in the center of one of the rooms.
In another video, most of the overall map is visible, with Lewisburg being one of the available locations to explore. The Greenbrier County Courthouse marks the town, leaving viewers to wonder just how much of downtown is playable.
Fallout 76 is scheduled to be released on Nov. 14.
