Did you know there is a treasure map of resources in Greenbrier County that can lead you and your family toward healthy, fun activities?
The Greenbrier County Health Alliance has created a first of its kind Asset Map of resources from communities across the county to help people connect with local treasures to improve their health.
The map aims to be a useful guide for local residents and visitors to find healthy activities in Alderson, Rainelle, Charmco, Renick, Frankford, Ronceverte, Lewisburg, Rupert, White Sulphur Springs, Quinwood and Williamsburg. The map features a variety of physical activity assets, which are opportunities within each community to get out and become more active. Picnic pavilions, parks, playgrounds, sports fields, walking trails, gyms, golf courses, tennis courts and boat access points were inventoried locally and plotted on a map of the county.
The mission of the Greenbrier County Health Alliance is to empower local communities using systems and evidence-based approaches to improve the overall health and wellness for all county residents. This innovative project aligns with the mission and has been two years in the making. It was a founding goal of the alliance to publish a map, a vision that was supported through funding by the Claude W. Benedum Foundation.
The mapping project engaged communities in the inventory process. An alliance asset mapping taskforce included representatives from each area of the county to create a list of assets in their communities. Tours of each area were conducted to confirm points of interest to be mapped and photos were taken to illustrate the map.
Within the asset map, one can find features detailing hours, rules of use, types of equipment, etc., for listed resources. Additionally, two other maps are linked to the site. One is a Food Asset Map that identifies community gardens, farmers markets and food bank information. The other map contains cultural community resources such as community centers, museums, small libraries and other points of interest.
