Mayor John Manchester proclaims Lewisburg’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Week in the presence of Martin Luther King Day Celebration planners and supporters. Shown standing behind the Mayor are Pam Marcus (left), Jenna Cucco, Steve Rutledge, Susanna Robinson-Kenga, Larry Davis, Ellen Broudy, Rev. Kathie Holland, Jennifer Wykle and Danny Seams.

The proclamation stressed the importance of Dr. King’s contributions to the momentous progress of the civil rights movement 50 years ago in 1964. It also announced that the legacy of Dr. King will be honored on Jan. 20 with a march from the courthouse to the Lewisburg United Methodist Church, a community lunch without charge, and a celebration service with music played, essays read and oratory spoken. These activities will begin at 11 a.m.

Some members of the event’s planning committee were present to hear the Mayor’s proclamation. Committee members who could not attend were Clifford Curry, Rosemary Winston, Joe Chasnoff, James Wilmer and Matt Hubbard of Bethlehem Farm.
