On May 31, the award winning short play, Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson: Azimuth Angles, Orbit Calculations, Trajectories, Moon Landing: “The Right Stuff,” was performed in Spartanburg, SC during a scholarship fund-raiser for the Breakfast Business and Professional Women’s Club.
An audience of nearly 500 watched Neely Seams, once more, give a stellar performance as Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson and Danny Seams perform excellently in the complementary roles of her father and a professor. Written and directed by Pamela Barry, this short play continues to make a powerful statement of accomplishment in the face of adversity based on the life of Katherine Johnson.
Also on the program were Kathy Goble Moore and Joylette Goble Hylick, daughters of Katherine Goble Johnson, who participated in a panel discussion. The evening was opened and closed by musical performances.
Pamela Barry said, “I was excited to present this monologue in Spartanburg. The program was inspirational and very powerful. Neely performed the Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson monologue and then Kathy and Joylette shared stories of growing up with their mother and the lessons they learned from her. I sincerely hope we can do this again!”
The next morning, the play was performed for the students of Fairforest Middle School in a setting reminiscent of the performances here at James Monroe and Pocahontas County High Schools.
The Greenbrier Historical Society is honored to be associated with this play which made its debut in White Sulphur Springs, birthplace of Katherine Johnson, as a part of the 2017 Greenbrier Historical Society’s Home Tour Weekend.
