Ronceverte – Basil Burton Baker (Basil B. to many who knew bim) passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018, at the age of 94 at his home on Teaberry Road, Ronceverte.
Mr. Baker was born Sept. 27, 1923, in Ronceverte, to parents Andrew Clyde Baker and Eva Green Baker.
Following service to his country in the Army as a cook for the troops, Basil returned home to Greenbrier County for the remainder of his life.
Basil was employed by C.J. Casdorph & Sons and Martin & Jones for a number of years respectively and enjoyed the interaction with all those he met. His spare time was spent enjoying time with the Kings Fish Hunt Club, Ronceverte Lions Club, and as a volunteer with the Ronceverte Food Pantry.
He was a long standing member of the Ronceverte Presbyterian Church where he served in many capacities and was both a deacon and an elder. His church was very important to him.
Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alta Baker Phillips and Margret Baker Garner; and brothers, Calvin (infant), Paul, and Leon.
Those left to cherish memories of Basil are his wife Faye to whom he was married 66 years and two daughters, Pamela Carter (Billy) and Angela Whited (Alan); two grandchildren, Allison Whited McMellon (Jason) and Gary Whited (Jamie); three great-grandsons, Ryan McMellon, Kyle McMellon, and Cash Whited. Also, a number of “Baker’’ family members.
A funeral service will be held at Ronceverte Presbyterian Church Sunday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens in Lewisburg. Please note there will be no visitation prior to the service. However, in the upcoming days just privately think of some memory you have of Basil that makes you smile since he loved a good humorous story or tale as we all know.
If anyone should so choose, memorial donations can be made to the Ronceverte Presbyterian Church Building Fund, the Ronceverte Food Pantry, or the Lewisburg Hospice to which the family will be forever grateful.
