Ash Wednesday services
The celebration of the Mass for Ash Wednesday will take place at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in White Sulphur Springs on Feb. 14 at 8:30 a.m. with the distribution of ashes immediately following the daily Mass. That day also there will be a daily Mass and distribution of ashes following the 12 noon Mass at St. Louis King of France in Lewisburg, and at 6 p.m. at the St. Catherine of Siena Church in Ronceverte. Following the Mass and distribution of ashes will be a homemade soup supper hosted by the Catholic Youth of the Greenbrier Valley. The public is invited to join the area Catholics for these opening worship services for the Lenten season. Alleghany Highlands Council 8689 hosts Lenten Fish Dinners
The Lenten Fish dinners hosted by the Alleghany Highlands Council 8689 Knights of Columbus will once again be served in the Parker Community Center at the back of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in downtown White Sulphur Springs each Friday during the Lenten Season beginning Feb. 16 from 4:30-7 p.m. through Mar. 23. The menu consists of fried or baked tilapia, scalloped potatoes, cole slaw, a variety of deserts, hard rolls, coffee, iced tea, or sodas, and is prepared by perhaps the most respected volunteer kitchen staff for any fish dinner in southern WV. The staff is headed by Chef Sue Moats of Pocahontas County and Chef Paul Cicora, both currently on the culinary staff at The Greenbrier, along with Chef Carol Herrick of Lewisburg and retired Chef Debra Fabrey of White Sulphur Springs. Volunteer and supporters of Members of the Knights of Columbus and its auxiliary also complete the kitchen staff makeup. Proceeds from the Feb. 16, 23, and Mar. 2, 9, 16, and 23 dinners will help support youth community church council projects in Pocahontas, Greenbrier, Monroe, and eastern Fayette counties in WV, as well as Alleghany and Bath counties in VA.
