Students can learn or refresh their office skills in administrative office courses offered online and at all campuses of New River Community and Technical College.
“Students can take an individual course or two; or study for one of our programs where they earn a certificate or a degree,” according to Lizabeth Rogers, professor of business at the Greenbrier Valley Campus in Lewisburg. “The administrative office and business computer courses prepare students for employment as administrative assistants, secretaries, clerks and other office workers in business, industry, government and the professions. The curriculum provides students with the knowledge and training necessary to succeed in traditional and high-tech environments.”
Students can choose to complete an associate degree in Administrative Office Technology or Administrative Office Management; a technical certificate in Technical Office Procedures and Skills, Legal Office Assisting, or Medical Insurance Billing and Coding; or students can complete a shorter skill set certificate in Receptionist, Certified Customer Service Specialist, Medical Machine Transcriptionist or Computer Software Applications Specialist.
“New River also offers the Administrative Office Technology degree program and the Technical Office Procedures and Skills certificate program in an accelerated format at the Beckley Campus,” according to Amanda Sauchuck, visiting instructor of accelerated programs.
In addition to Rogers and Sauchuck, learning in the administrative office courses is facilitated by Bruce Sneidman, professor at the Mercer County Campus in Princeton: Jill Holliday, instructional specialist at the Advanced Technology Center in Ghent and at the Greenbrier Valley Campus; Margaret LeRose, adjunct instructor at the Nicholas County Campus in Summersville; and Deena Rodgers, administrative assistant to the Campus Dean at the Greenbrier Valley Campus.
“Students can learn to keyboard in our Keyboarding and Document Processing I class or build their skill in the more advanced Keyboarding and Document Processing II course,” says Sneidman. “Both courses teach the latest Microsoft document processing product, Microsoft Word 2013.”
Other administrative office courses offered for the spring semester include Office Accounting, Office Practice, Records Systems, Text Editing and Machine Transcription, and Administrative Office Management.
New River’s spring semester classes begin Jan. 13, and Jan. 3 is the last day to register. All college offices will be closed Dec. 23 – Jan. 1 for the winter break.
