Mountain Media LLC, a Lewisburg-based community newspaper company, has purchased the assets of Calhoun Publishing Inc., which includes the Calhoun Chronicle and Grantsville News community weekly newspaper.
Mountain Media LLC, based in Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, West Virginia, publishes community weekly newspapers, their affiliated publications and multimedia products in the two Virginia’s. Owner Michael Showell is a strong believer in community newspapers and their role in strengthening the communities they serve.
“Community newspapers are an evolving part of the diverse media landscape. They offer objective local news coverage that is a really critical service unparalleled by any other medium,” Showell said. “I am proud and humble to be involved in that service.”
The purchase of The Calhoun Chronicle and Grantsville News expands Mountain Media’s presence in West Virginia. “The Calhoun Chronicle and Grantsville News has been vital a contributor to the community and we look forward to continuing to be an important part of Calhoun County,” Showell said.
When asked about future acquisition plans, Showell explained that, as always his first and foremost focus is to fully develop the publications he already owns. But he would be open to any strategically beneficial opportunities that presented themselves.
Mountain Media, LLC publishes the Mountain Messenger in Greenbrier County, The Pocahontas Times in Pocahontas County, Clay County Free Press, The Shinnston News and Harrison County Journal and The Parsons Advocate in Tucker County, West Virginia and in Virginia, The Enterprise in Patrick County, The Salem Times-Register and the Vinton Messenger, The Fincastle Herald in Botetourt County, The News Messenger in Christiansburg, The News Journal in Radford and The New Castle Record in Craig County.
