The Alderson Train Depot will be the site of the annual Alderson Train Show on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 3, from 1 to 4 p.m. There is no charge for this event, but donations will be gratefully accepted as we are trying to make the fully restored depot self-sufficient.
Every room in the Depot will have at least one operating model train layout. There will be layouts in G scale, O scale, HO scale and N scale. Some will be modern; some old time, and at least one whimsical. The owner/operators of most layouts will be present to talk about the hobby and answer questions.
The gift shop will be open to suggest reasonably priced gifts for the train buff in the family.
The Depot has been fully restored both inside and out, with the work on the outside having been completed just this fall. The Depot is one of only two like it on the entire C&O (CSX) system. While there are many depots that seem to look just like this one, only Alderson and Waynesboro, VA, have this footprint. Originally constructed in 1896, it looks now as it did then.
The museum in the depot is still being developed. We have some wonderful artifacts from the days when the Depot was part of the C&O but could always use more. Do you have some historical artifacts left by someone in your family who worked for the railroad? If so, we would be happy to add them to our collection. There are two ways to do this: first is an outright donation to the depot and the other is a donation in which you maintain ownership of the material, but make a long term loan to the Depot. Your gift will be acknowledged no matter which kind it will be and if it is a loan will be so marked so that you can reclaim it at your pleasure. Please consider sharing the pieces of history you have stored away with others who will not otherwise get a chance to see those items.
Remember the train show and come visit Alderson!
