The students of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) invite the community to come join them for this special community event.
“Build Your Park and Keep It Running” is the theme for a 5K run/walk on Saturday, Oct. 21, in honor WVSOM’s President’s Day of Service. Funds raised from the race will be allotted to renovate Dorie Miller Park in Lewisburg. The event is sponsored by the WVSOM Community Relations Committee and Student Government Association.
Check-in for the event will be at 7:30 a.m. at the WVSOM Student Center (look for the clock tower). The race starts at 8 a.m. and the route will course through the surrounding neighborhoods and back to the campus. Gift cards will be given to the first, second, and third place winners, and commemorative T-shirts will be available. Kids are welcome to the event and to participate in a kiddie race. Face painting and other activities will also be part of the fun.
To register prior to the race, contact gmorton@osteo.wvsom.edu or call 304-647-6422. The pre-registration fee-$25; Day of the race-$30; Children 5 to 11-$5.
Dorie Miller Park commemorates Dorie Miller, a hero of WWII. The park is currently undergoing a facelift, which will take place over a period of two years. Improvements so far include a new parking lot, a restroom and kitchen prep area added to the adjacent shelter, and brighter field lighting has been installed at the ballfield. Soon, a new shelter will be constructed near the children’s play area, another restroom will be installed, and the parking area along Feamster Road will be significantly enlarged. New playground equipment installation is on the drawing board for next year.
Support the park, WVSOM and the community by keeping it running!
